Founder – Chief Dental Officer – Managing Director
Dr. Steven D. Muckey is the founder of TLC Dental, Chief Dental Officer and Managing Director of its six dental practices in Florida. He has been a licensed and practicing dentist since 1980, and since that time has developed and successfully run several dental practices and dental management companies throughout the state.
Dr. Muckey’s most recent commendation is the 2017 “Small Business Person Of The Year” awarded by the Dania Beach Chamber of Commerce. In addition, his talented team at TLC Dental-Dania was awarded 2017 Small Business Of The Year.
Dr. Muckey received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Georgetown University and his Bachelor of Science from UCLA. He served as a Clinical Research Evaluator with Dr. Gordon Christensen for over 17 years, and for the past 20 years has been the only Florida licensed dentist, certified by CADP as a Quality Assurance Consultant. Quality improvement and quality management protocols in all TLC Dental practices set a benchmark for the state.
An Able Toastmaster Bronze, Dr. Muckey has lectured internationally to dental school faculty and is now frequently requested to speak in South Florida-with his favorite topic being the “Mouth Body Connection”. Dr. Muckey served four years as a Clinical Adjunct Professor at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine, and for several years has sat on a Credentialing Committee for one of the largest insurance companies in the nation. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Florida Dental Association, the Atlantic Coast District Dental Society, the Broward County Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Georgetown University Alumni Association of Ft. Lauderdale. Dr. Muckey volunteers his services for numerous healthcare and wellness related events throughout South Florida and has been an interviewer for over 25 years for the Georgetown University Admissions Committee. He lives vicariously through the successes of his team.
Sasha M. Tapie, Chief Operating Officer
Sasha Tapie brings with him 20+ years of experience to TLC Dental. With a proven track record of success in leading teams in business operations, leadership development, marketing and sales development, he has advised some of the world’s leading corporations such as American Express, AT&T, Citibank, Columbia Pictures/Records, Comcast, MLB, NBA, SONY, and Universal just to name a few.
Sasha’s main focus with those companies has been in the areas of corporate restructuring, sales development, training and personal development. In addition to working with Fortune 100 companies, Sasha also garnered in-depth experience working with small to mid-size businesses including numerous dental and medical practices. His knowledge has helped build efficient corporate infrastructures while building awareness of his clients’ practices, brands, services and products.
His passion for working with dental practices, along with improving patient care, is where he has found his greatest professional satisfaction and is what led him to the Dental Industry. He has worked extensively with dental practices for the last decade and a half, including coaching with Fortune Management.
Sasha graduated from the renowned Stuyvesant High School in New York City and continued on to NYU and the College for Human Services where he completed his dual degree in Business Administration and Psychology.
He shares his home in S. Florida with his wife, a licensed Nurse. Together, they enjoy a love for each other and a passion for their pets, personal development, education, culture and travel.
Dr. Mark Romer, Director
Dr. Romer is a native Floridian and was raised on Miami Beach. After attending the University of Florida (GO Gators!), he was accepted and graduated from the Medical College of Va., Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dental Medicine.
After spending two years in the U.S. Navy, he returned to South Florida to establish a dental practice in Lauderhill for 32 years.
When the dental school at Nova-Southeastern University started, he was an adjunct faculty member until 2006 when he sold his practice and became a full time faculty member at NSU School of Dental Medicine until 2012.
In 2012, Dr. Romer was hired as a founding faculty member at LECOM School of Dental Medicine where he rose to become the Assistant Dean of pre-clinical education until 2017.
Dr. Romer, a well-respected and passionate mentor, has served many positions in organized dentistry including past President of both Broward County Dental Association and Atlantic Coast District Dental Association.
Always extremely supportive of dentistry and in the highest quality of standard care, he will be serving TLC Dental in the role of Director – Continuous Quality Improvement.
Mauricio Taranto, Controller
Mauricio spent his childhood surfing at two beautiful beaches, Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Santa Monica beach in sunny California. Having moved to California with his family at age 15, Mauricio went to Santa Monica, and Malibu High Schools. After his family returned to Brazil a few years later, he studied at the Brazilian Institute of Finance and Marketing, in Rio de Janeiro, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Then he followed in his father’s footsteps and took over the family garment manufacturing company, expanding it into a retail chain of stores as well as an export company. In 2009, craving a more stable life than Brazil had to offer, Mauricio and his bride Juliana moved to Los Angeles. For the next seven years, Mauricio worked at the Cedars Towers Surgical Medical Group. As Financial Manager/Controller heading a ten person staff, he handled financial planning, budgeting, analysis, and internal auditing. He created a cash flow department supporting six medical clinics and over 200 physicians. To shrink the distance between them and their family in Brazil, Juliana, Mauricio, and sons Patrick, age 6, and Nicholas, age 3, decided to move to Florida where they are just settling into their new life joining the TLC family.
Myriam Sanders, Director of Operations
Myriam earned her business degree in 1984 from Washington School for Secretaries and ventured into the dental field in 1985. After 12 years managing several dental practices, Bright Now Dental promoted Myriam to District Manager overseeing 4 practices, then eventually Mid-Atlantic Regions Manager overseeing 12 practices. Most recently she led a de novo start-up practice in Manassas, Virginia to unprecedented levels of success in just 12 months. Myriam leads by example promoting excellence in patient care and achieving special success enhancing communication among specialists, general dentists, and patients- aligning each on the benefits and consequences of their choices and care. Born in Lima Peru, Myriam immigrated to the US in 1979, and received her US Citizenship in1989. Myriam and her husband recently relocated to Florida. They both enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, camping, as well as concerts, food, wine and friends.
Val Dhanraj – HQ Manager – Practice Development Manager
Val, a vibrant, animated, energetic dental veteran, has served the dental industry for over 20 years. She began her career as a Dental Assistant. Always exceeding her own goals she quickly climbed up the ladder into management in the first two years. Later, Val joined a large insurance company expanding her duties in the administrative aspect of dentistry. She gained an abundance of knowledge as a Senior Specialty Claims Processor and was then promoted into management and then further promoted to be a National Claims Auditor.
After seventeen years, she decided to return back to private practices where she was able to utilize her knowledge and expertise in insurance background to help expand and improve the offices. For the past twelve years, she has been a Practice Development Manager for various private dental offices and then regionally for larger, group practices. Being a mother of four children, two daughters and two sons – plus a granddaughter who she lives for, makes Val a very happy soul.
Ramon Sanchez – Practice Development Manager
Ramon was born and raised in Valencia, Venezuela and relocated to sunny South Florida back in 2009. As a foreign graduated Oral Surgeon who happens to be passionate about the dental business’ operations, Ramon has a great combination that helps him understand every patient’s need from both perspectives.
With over 10 years of experience and variety of exposure, from Oral Surgery to Pediatrics, he always accomplishes his number one priority of delivering 100% excellence in patient care and happy working environments. Ramon believes that a great leader is one that helps their team members develop, grow and succeed. His mantra is “servant leadership is the best management style”.
If Ramon is not at the office, he is spending time with family, friends and his wife Mary. He also loves to cook, entertain, enjoy a good glass of wine and believes that family time is priceless!
Lauri Stein – Business Development | Credentialing
Lauri was born and raised in South Florida. She graduated the University of Florida with a Bachelors in Sociology in 2000. Post-graduation, Lauri worked in the Classifieds Department for the Sun-Sentinel. From there she ventured into Advertising, where she worked for a local automotive advertising agency, MJS Advertising, for the next five years. Her advertising career began in the Media Department and then she later transitioned into an Account Executive. With her father, mother and two uncles all immersed in the dental field, it was inevitable that Lauri would eventually join forces with them! In 2011, Lauri joined the TLC Dental family, where she runs the Marketing and Credentialing Department. She loves animals, the beach, going to Disney and spending time with friends and family.
Stacey Serrano – Practice Manager – Tamarac
Stacey has been thriving in the dental field for over 10 years now. She loves working in this field because she gets to help people on a daily basis. When a patient completes treatment in her office and is now confident about their smile, it brings her a tremendous amount of joy!
Stacey has lived all across the USA including New York and California! She moved to the sunshine state when she was 7 years old and has been here ever since.
She is completely head over heels over her 3 children and loves everything outdoors!! She is a happy soul when she is on the beach with her toes in the sand.
Stacey states, “I love my TLC family… from my entire team to the way TLC puts patients first! I am truly blessed to be a part of such a GREAT TEAM!!”
Melissa Rodriguez – Practice Manager – Ft. Lauderdale
Melissa was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey and recently moved to Florida in 2014 with Hector, her 3 little ones and their family dog Jordan.
She absolutely loves her position at TLC Dental. It shows in the enthusiasm and joy she brings to each patient that walks through our doors. Melissa’s vast knowledge of skills range from treatment planning, insurance verification, processing of dental claims, financial assistance and guidance, training, specialty coordination and leading her team to excellence!
Interacting with patients, instilling their trust, building long-lasting relationships and improving others’ health is truly her calling in life. She loves TLC Dental since it is her home away from home and considers her staff as part of her family!
In addition to her passion for helping our patients get the best care they can get, she believes family time is the best time and can’t get enough hours in the day with them.
Susan Butler – Practice Manager
Susan started her career in dentistry when she joined the US Air Force and was told she would be a Dental Assistant. For 41 years, she has never regretted it. She has worked in almost every field of dentistry…as an assistant, to manager, and onto consulting and computer training.
In the 1980’s, computers were being installed in dental offices across the country and she quickly learned that her inner child was a geek. She has never met a computer that she didn’t like. Her passion for technology and her experience with insurance and management make it enjoyable for her to teach and lead her team toward excellence.
On the personal side of Susan, you will find a dedicated Veteran still serving others through the American Legion. She shares her home with her three cats and cares for a few feral kitties as well.
Cameron Esgate – Practice Manager
Cameron, full of energy and positive vibe, works with patients to provide quality, cost-effective dental care in a compassionate, family-oriented and professional environment. He continually makes a difference by changing stereotypes associated with dentistry, such as becoming more empathetic to our patients and educating them through detailed examinations in a caring atmosphere. He loves dentistry because he is helping change and enhance patients’ smiles every day.
Cameron earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Cameron holds certifications in leadership training, OSHA, HIPPA and Nomad portable x-ray unit training.
He and his wife enjoy boating, reading and playing in the yard with their four beautiful children.
